Stump Grinding vs. Stump Removal: What's the Difference?
Grinding vs. full stump removal explained — how each works, when you need which, and what's best for most Vancouver yards.
People often use the terms interchangeably, but they're different jobs.
Stump grinding
A grinder chews the stump down below ground level, leaving wood chips. The roots stay in the soil and break down naturally over time. It's fast, tidy and suits most yards.
Full removal (root-ball excavation)
True full removal means digging out the stump and its main root ball with heavy equipment. Stump Doctor doesn't do that — we're grinders. For most yards, grinding removes the eyesore without the mess of an excavator.
Which do you need?
If you want to re-sod, plant nearby or just reclaim the space, grinding is almost always the answer. If your project genuinely calls for root-ball excavation, an excavating contractor handles that — and we can grind away what remains afterward.
